Defence Ministry Approves Transfer Of 6.85 Lakh Sq M Defence Land For Secunderabad Elevated Corridors

Hyderabad:The defence ministry has formally approved the transfer of over 6.85 lakh square metres of defence land to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) for the construction of two elevated corridors under the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP), one along state highway-1 (SH-1) from Jubilee bus station to Shameerpet, and the other along National Highway-44 (NH-44).

The SH-1 portion is valued at over ₹954 crore and the NH-44 portion at over ₹748 crore.

The approval was issued through a corrigendum dated July 8, which amends the ministry’s earlier land transfer order from March 2024. The SH-1 corridor will involve 4,59,222.70 sq.m of defence land, while the NH-44 corridor will use 2,26,039.91 sq.m together spanning properties managed by the Army, Air Force, DRDO, Director General Quality Assurance, Defence Estates Office (DEO), and the Secunderabad Cantonment Board.

The land covers various survey numbers under multiple classifications, including military roads, old grants, leased land, and Board-administered properties. Compensation will be provided in the form of equal value land (EVL), cash, and equivalent value infrastructure (EVI). The DEO-Secunderabad will manage the transaction and compliance processes, and the Directorate General Defence Estates (DGDE) will monitor the implementation.

The corridors are intended to ease long-standing traffic congestion in Secunderabad by enabling high-speed, uninterrupted connectivity through areas currently constrained by military land holdings. With this approval, HMDA is expected to begin execution processes in coordination with central and local defence authorities.
