Multiple Causes for Movement Disorders Identified

Hyderabad: Tremors in hands and legs, difficulty in walking, unsteady steps, and slurred speech are not always caused by Parkinson’s disease alone. There are multiple other underlying conditions that can lead to such movement disorders, and treatment approaches should be based on both the root cause and the severity of the symptoms, according to several national-level medical experts.

The significance of this understanding was emphasized at the “Practical Neurology–2025” Advances in movement disorders conference conference, held on Sunday under the guidance of the Neurosciences Department of KIMS Hospitals, one of Hyderabad’s leading medical institutions. The event aimed to raise awareness especially among neurologists and neurosurgeons working in Tier-2 cities and towns, who often encounter such cases in clinical practice.
The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Bollineni Bhaskar Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of KIMS Hospitals, Dr. Mohan Das, Chief Consultant Neurologist; and Dr. Manas Kumar Panigrahi, Head of the Neurosurgery Department and Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon. More than 200 neurologists and neurosurgeons from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra attended the session.
Medical experts explained that various neurological conditions such as Chorea, Dystonia, Atypical Parkinson’s Syndromes, and Wilson’s Disease can also cause movement-related issues. They noted that treatment should be tailored according to the specific diagnosis and its intensity. Among all the available therapies, MRgFUS (Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound) has emerged as one of the most advanced and fast-acting options. When patients understand this procedure and opt for it, results can often be seen immediately—sometimes as soon as they get up from the treatment table. So far, KIMS Hospitals has successfully treated 19 patients using MRgFUS, and their video testimonials, describing their recovery journeys, were showcased during the conference.
In addition to MRgFUS, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) was also discussed as an effective therapy for certain movement disorders. Furthermore, in some specific cases, Botox injections have proven to be highly successful in reducing symptoms, offering another valuable treatment path.
The event was organized by Dr.M. Jayasree, Consultant Neurologist and Movement Disorder Specialist at KIMS, who served as the Organizing Secretary. Several senior doctors from KIMS, including Dr. Subhash Kaul, Dr. Gopalakrishna, Dr. Seetha Jayalakshmi, Dr. Varalakshmi, Dr. Praveen Kumar Yada, and Dr. Anuja Patil, were actively involved in the discussions.
Renowned neurologists and neurosurgeons from across India also participated and spoke about these evolving treatments. These included Dr. Mohit Bhatt from Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, Dr. Kalyan B. Bhattacharya from Medica Hospital in Kolkata, Dr. Hrishikesh Kumar from the Institute of Neurosciences, Kolkata, Dr. Rupa Rajan from AIIMS New Delhi, Dr. Pramod Pal from NIMHANS Bengaluru, Dr.L.K. Prashanth from the Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Clinic in Bengaluru, Dr. K.P. Divya from SCTIMST in Thiruvananthapuram, Dr. Neeraj Kumar from AIIMS Bibinagar, and Dr. Rupam Borgohain and Dr. Rukmini Mridula from Yashoda Hospitals, Hitech City.
The conference served as a platform for sharing critical knowledge about the latest treatment methods for movement disorders, encouraging doctors to adopt innovative approaches and offer faster, more effective solutions to patients suffering from debilitating neurological conditions.
